Cost of Living Support

This page has been created to be a hub for all the support you can access locally to help you through this difficult period as the cost of living continues to rise. This page will be regularly updated, so if you know of any support that we’ve not listed that you think will be useful, please do get in touch and we will get it added. If someone you know could use any of the support listed, please pass this page on to them.

As always, our inbox is open, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch any time.

Caring Hands in the Vale

Website | 07749 377473 | Facebook

Caring Hands in the Vale supplies emergency food parcels and other essential items for those who desperately need them. We do not undertake any assessments ourselves and operate on referral from a network of community-based organisations. If you feel you are entitled to help you need to have a referral.

Please note you will not be able to receive a food parcel without a referral slip. Food parcels can ONLY be collected between 12 noon and 2pm (Mondays to Thursdays) and 3:30 to 5:30pm on Fridays, except by special arrangement.

All households will receive a rebate of £400 to reduce energy bills and will be applied over a 6 month period from October to March. This will automatically be applied by your energy provider.

Households in receipt of the Winter Fuel Payment will receive an extra £300 in November and December.

Two payments totalling £650 will be made to those who receive the following benefits:

  • Universal Credit
  • Income-based Jobseekers Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Working tax credit
  • Child tax credit
  • Pension credit

The first of these payments will have been made in July. In addition to this, some people on disability benefits will receive an additional £150 from the 20th September.

In addition to this the Government will be limiting the price that suppliers can charge for each unit of energy. For a typical household, this means that an annual bill will not rise above £2,500 from October. This guarantee will last for two years.

If you are renting it has been confirmed that landlords will, through legislation, have to pass on the £400 rebate to tenants with all-inclusive bills.

There will also be support for business owners with plans for wholesale gas and electricity prices for firms to be fixed for 6 months from 1st October. Hospitals, schools and charities will also get help.

Severn Trent have a range of financial support schemes available to help you to pay your bill. They know people are feeling the squeeze right now, and want your water bill to be one less thing for you to worry about.

If you need a helping hand, their financial support schemes can offer you the support you need to get back on track. You’re not alone. They are currently helping more than 215,000 customers a year with their financial support schemes.

The Big Difference Scheme

The Big Difference Scheme can offer a reduction of water bills to any Severn Trent customer with a household income below £18,278. Households with child dependants may be eligible for an additional income allowance in excess of this amount.

The Support you Could Get

  • You could get up to 90% off the average Severn Trent bill.
  • The Big Difference Scheme will assess your household income when you apply.
  • That assessment determines how big a reduction you’re able to get.

If your application is successful, you’ll get a new payment plan. The Big Difference Scheme design a payment plan especially for you. Your new plan will include payments towards any debt on your account.

The scheme runs for 12 months at a time. You’ll have to apply again at the end of each year-long period.
