Mid Worcestershire Labour Party joins other local CLPs in petitioning for all shire counties to draw up franchise agreements with bus companies.
Fundamentally we believe that a bus is not a machine with 4 wheels but represents a large part of people’s lives.
After campaigning for months for the 144 bus, we have concluded that we, collectively with other Labour Party CLPs in Worcestershire, have to organize en-masse to change the law. We need a law that allows us to implement a Manchester style bus service.
This service regulates the bus services insofar as franchising private companies to work for our local authority. What this means is that the bus company no longer stipulates routes, nor does it price it’s service. We do that through our local authority. The plan runs across the county and takes into consideration cycle hubs and train timetable. Yes the local authority, the county council has a big job under this law, but the rewards are high.
The reward is freedom. Freedom for teenagers to travel safely, freedom for keyworkers working in hospitals, care homes, supermarkets and economic freedom for businesses who need staff to get to work more easily! Buses are about people’s lives, about economic development and about freedom.
Our petition will pressure local councillors to talk our language and to move on this important topic.
We believe we can change the law to benefit our community, It’s what we should and must do now. Buses are about people’s lives.
